The inaugural ceremony itself represented the study component, at which the keynote address was delivered by Sr. Barbara Reid, O.P., Academic Dean of Catholic Theological Union and a respected scriptural scholar. Following the inaugural ceremony on Sunday afternoon, a reception offered Fr. Caron to celebrate with Aquinas students, faculty, alumni, board members, family, and friends. <title>Fr. Benedict Ashley, O.P., Noted Theologian, Philosopher, and Priest Dies at 97</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/dãƒæ’ã†â€™ãƒâ¢ã¢â€šâ¬ã…“/resources/joblistings/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/163/Fr-Benedict-Ashley-OP-Noted-Theologian-Philosopher-and-Priest-Dies-at-97.aspx</link>
<description>Dominican Fr. Benedict Ashley authored over 20 books, including his autobiography released just last month.
(Chicago, IL, February 28, 2013) Fr. Benedict M. Ashley, O.P., well-known Dominican theologian and philosopher whose major influence on Catholic theology and ethics in America were evident in his writing, teaching, and consulting, died on February 23rd after a brief illness. He was 97 and a Dominican Friar since 1942.

Fr. Ashley authored over 20 books, including Theologies of the Body; Living the Truth in Love: a Biblical Introduction to Moral Theology, Thomas Aquinas: Gifts of the Spirit, Spiritual Direction in the Dominican Tradition, and The Dominicans. His passionate intellectual pursuits from a young man made him a major voice in the development of the “River Forest School” of Thomism. Fr. Ashley received an M.A. from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. form the University of Notre Dame. In addition, he was granted an S.T.L. and Ph.D. from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis.
Fr. Ashley taught at numerous institutions, including Aquinas Institute of Theology, a Dominican graduate school, where he served as president from 1962 to 1969. Ashley later held the title of Associate Professor at the Center for Health Care Ethics at St. Louis University’s Health Sciences Center. Health Care Ethics: A Catholic Theological Analysis, which he co-authored with fellow Dominican Fr. Kevin O’Rourke O.P., and Jean deBlois, C.S.J., is considered a fundamental text in the field of Catholic bioethics.
Just last month, Fr. Ashley published his milestone autobiography, Barefoot Journeying: An Autobiography of a Begging Friar (New Priory Press, Chicago). This memoir covers Ashley’s remarkable life, from his youth in Kansas, his studies at the University of Chicago in the 1930s under Professors Mortimer Adler, Thornton Wilder, and Gertrude Stein, to his decades of service as a Dominican priest. The work also extensively reflects on the upheaval and realities in the Catholic Church before and after the Second Vatican Council.
When asked to comment on Fr. Ashley’s 600-plus page autobiography, Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, said, “Fr. Benedict Ashley brings to his own life both the depth of objective analysis he uses in other studies and the subjectivity, grounded in the truths of the Catholic faith and the love for Christ and his Church, that only he can disclose. This is a good book reflecting the life of a truly good man.&quot;
Among many distinguished appointments, Fr. Ashley continued to serve the Institute for Advanced Physics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was a member of the advisory board of the Lumen Christi Institute for Catholic Thought in Hyde Park.
Two of Fr. Benedict’s most prestigious awards and honors are the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal conferred by John Paul II and the post-doctoral Master in Sacred Theology from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Even into his 90s, Fr. Ashley would periodically teach formal theology courses at Aquinas Institute. Just as he had taught and formed young Dominicans during his first years of formal ministry, likewise toward the end of his life he again lived for many years in the stadium community (this time in St. Louis), where his edifying example of Dominican life continued to inspire many young brothers in initial formation. Due to declining health, Fr. Ashley moved to St. Pius V Priory in Chicago in 2009, and in 2013 at the age of 97, surrounded by his brother Dominicans, he was still earnestly engaged in the 'apostolate of the pen.’ Never content merely to shine, Fr. Ashley studiously sought to illuminate others even into his final days.
A funeral Mass in celebration of his life will be held at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in River Forest, Illinois, on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Memorial gifts will be directed to the Ashley-O’Rourke Initiative in Health Care Mission at Aquinas Institute of Theology. For information, see www.domcentral.org or call 312.243.0011.

His Doctorate of Ministry was earned at Catholic Theological Union in 1998. Both Fr. Charles Bouchard, O.P., Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Albert the Great, and Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P., Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Martin de Porres, said that Fr. Caron's appointment is an excellent example of collaboration between the two provinces. &quot;Working together will strengthen us and will enable us to serve the church better,&quot; they said.

The Provincial Council and the Board of Trustees expressed their gratitude to the members of the Search Committee for their excellent work. Members of the Search Committee are Sandra Johnson, JD, chair and trustee; Javier Orozco, O.F.S., Ph.D., trustee; and Dee A. Joyner, Aquinas M.A. '11, trustee; Fr. Louis Morrone, O.P., Vicar Provincial of the Province of St. Albert the Great; and Catherine Vincie, R.S.H.M., Ph.D., professor of Liturgical and Sacramental Theology.

When notified of the impending announcement, Saint Louis Archbishop Robert J. Carlson said, &quot;In the fine tradition of the Dominican Apostolate, Aquinas Institute of Theology has become a catechetical powerhouse both locally and beyond when it comes to training and equipping future preachers and evangelists in the Catholic faith. Aquinas Institute's philosophy of preparing future priests and church leaders to share the fruits of contemplation in a way that reflects the intersection of the Church's theology and everyday life is one with great potential to influence our local Church, our world and eternity. The mission of Aquinas Institute is to educate men and women to preach, to teach, to minister, and to lead.&quot;

Aquinas Institute of Theology is a graduate school of theology and ministry. It has about 300 students, including Dominican and Resurrectionist priesthood candidates. The school serves a joint formation community of two Dominican provinces which is located at St. Dominic Priory, 3407 Lafayette Avenue.

    <title>Dr. Sandra Keating, Ph.D., S.T.L., to Present 2013 Aquinas Lecture on Catholic/Muslim Engagement</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/dãƒæ’ã†â€™ãƒâ¢ã¢â€šâ¬ã…“/resources/joblistings/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/157/Dr-Sandra-Keating-PhD-STL-to-Present-2013-Aquinas-Lecture-on-CatholicMuslim-Engagement.aspx</link>
<description>&amp;#160;(St. Louis) Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis is pleased to announce that Dr. Sandra Keating, Ph.D., S.T.L. will present the 30th annual Aquinas Lecture, titled “Toward the True and Holy: Catholic Engagement with Islam Today”, on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at 3:00 P.M., at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church in St. Louis. Responding to Dr. Keating’s presentation will be Ghazala Hayat, M.D.
50 years after the Second Vatican Council, the dialog between Catholicism and Islam continues to bear fruit towards genuine understanding and mutual regard. Recognizing with Pope Benedict XVI that &quot;we must seek paths of reconciliation and learn to live with respect with each other's identity,&quot; Dr. Keating's lecture will explore areas of both cooperation and challenge that remain.
In the years following the Second Vatican Council, the Church's relationship to the world's religions has developed through committed dialog. In particular, the relationship between Muslims and Catholics has grown since the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate officially recognized several areas of potential agreement with Muslims in the Christian understanding of God, who is one, living, knowing, and all-powerful.

Dr. Sandra Keating, Ph.D., S.T.L., Associate Professor of Theology at Providence College in Rhode Island, is a member of the USCCB Catholic-Muslim Dialogue group and a consultor on the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims. She teaches and publishes in the area of comparative religion with an emphasis on Catholic-Muslim Relations, and has published numerous articles and a book on relations between Muslims and Christians in the Middle East.
Ghazala Hayat, M.D., is a Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at Saint Louis University, and the former president of Interfaith Partnership/Faith Beyond Walls. She also serves as Chairperson for the Public Relations Committee of the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis, and is a frequent speaker in interfaith dialogue events. Dr. Hayat will respond to Dr. Keating’s presentation from a Muslim perspective.
Aquinas Institute of Theology hosts the Aquinas Lecture each year, inviting leading theologians and other experts to speak on current topics in theology and ministry. The Lecture is held annually in honor of our school’s patron, St. Thomas Aquinas. Invited scholars bring the thought of Thomas Aquinas and Catholic intellectual tradition to bear on contemporary theological questions and issues.
The Aquinas Lecture will be held in the ballroom of Saint Francis Xavier College Church, 3628 Lindell Boulevard, Saint Louis, Missouri, on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at 3:00 P.M. Admission to this event is free, and no reservations are required. Parking is available for a fee at Laclede Garage next to Saint Louis University. For more information regarding the Aquinas Lecture, call 314.256.8800, or visit the Aquinas Lecture web page on Aquinas Institute's web site.

<title>Jewish Scholar of New Testament to Offer Evening of Discussion, Dialogue at Aquinas Institute of Theology</title>

<description>(ST. LOUS) – Aquinas Institute of Theology, Eden Theological Seminary and the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Newmark Institute for Human Relations are pleased to co-sponsor an evening of discussion and dialogue with Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish scriptural scholar devoted to New Testament and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University. Her presentation will center on her study of New Testament texts from a Jewish perspective.
This event will take place on the evening of Sunday, September 23, and begins at 7:00 pm, at Aquinas Institute of Theology, 23 South Spring Avenue, Saint Louis, Missouri 63108. This evening will be supported by free-will offerings from those present. Pre-registration is encouraged; Call 314.442.3871 or send e-mail to abaer@jcrcstl.org.
Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences. Holding a B.A. from Smith College, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University, Professor Levine held office in the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the Association for Jewish Studies. Her books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus, the edited collection, The Historical Jesus in Context, and the fourteen-volume edited series, Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings. With Marc Brettler of Brandeis University, she has edited the Jewish Annotated New Testament, and she has written, with her Vanderbilt Colleague Douglas Knight, The Meaning of the Bible: What The Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach us. In 2011, Professor Levine became Affiliated Professor at the Woolf Institute: Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations at Cambridge, UK. Professor Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies.

Aquinas Institute of Theology, Eden Theological Seminary and the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Newmark Institute for Human Relations have collaborated as dialogue partners for many years, jointly hosting a public lecture and dialogue each fall. A chapter in Will Herberg’s famous book, Protestant, Catholic and Jew, is entitled, “The Three Religious Communities: Unity and Tensions,” and says that there can be no lasting unity that does not honestly address tensions between and among Jewish and Christian discussion partners. Aquinas, Eden and JCRC are proud to have been working for Unity between our religious communities and to do so in the context of an honest, positive approach to these tensions. The annual lecture and dialogue attends to the important work needed to be done between Protestants, Catholics and Jews.
Aquinas Institute of Theology is a Roman Catholic graduate school located in Saint Louis, Missouri, sponsored and administered by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), Province of Saint Albert the Great. Offering a number of graduate degree and certificate programs, Aquinas Institute’s foundation in the Catholic faith and Dominican mission is to educate men and women to preach, to teach, to minister, and to lead.

Caron’s appointment is an excellent example of collaboration between the two provinces. “Working together will strengthen us and will enable us to serve the church better,” noted Fr. Bouchard.

<title>2012 St. Rose of Lima Society Honorees Announced</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/dãƒæ’ã†â€™ãƒâ¢ã¢â€šâ¬ã…“/resources/joblistings/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/138/2012-St-Rose-of-Lima-Society-Honorees-Announced.aspx</link>
<description>(ST. LOUS) – Aquinas Institute of Theology is pleased to announce the recipients of the second annual St. Rose of Lima Society Award to recognize women who have made significant contributions to the life of the Catholic Church and the ministry of Jesus. Five women from the St. Louis and Metro East areas have been chosen for induction into the Society. Sister Julia Huiskamp, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Corliss Cox, Kathleen Davis, Rosario Gasquet, and Sister Carolyn Sur will be honored as Pillars of Dominican Spirituality. Their induction will take place at the St. Rose of Lima Society Luncheon on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 11:30 am, at the Chase Park Plaza, 212 North Kingshighway, Saint Louis, Missouri.
This society is named for St. Rose of Lima, who entered the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1602. St. Rose, the first person born in the Americas to be canonized a saint, is especially noteworthy for carrying her ministry into the wider community. The St. Rose of Lima Society recognizes and honors those women who exemplify the pillars central to Dominican spirituality: preaching, prayer, study and community.
Sister Julia Huiskamp, D.C., of East Saint Louis, Illinois is being honored with the St. Rose of Lima Lifetime Achievement Award. She has directly served children for 44 years and for 42 of those years the youngsters served were the poorest of the poor in the poverty stricken west side of Chicago and the devastated city of East Saint Louis. In addition to her direct service to children and their families, she is also an advocate for them on local, state, and national levels in matters concerning housing, education, health care, and social services. After beginning her professional career working as a reporter for the Keokuk Daily Gate City Newspaper, she decided she wanted her life’s work to have meaning “to be something more than a piece of newsprint that could be used to wrap someone’s garbage and thrown away.” In 1959 she entered the convent and has been a member of the Daughters of Charity for over fifty years. Since 1985, when she moved to East Saint Louis, she has taken on the task of improving the lives of children living in one of the city’s worst public housing projects. While working with the Coalition for Decent Housing, Sister Julia convinced the Department of Housing and Urban Development to give her a place for a youth program. The Griffin House took off immediately and grew to six sites helping over 750 children that were enrolled. In addition to her many activities serving children, Sr. Julia has also served on the Board of Voices for Illinois Children, The Daycare Action Council of Illinois, the Community Affairs Division of the United Way of Greater Saint Louis, the Housing Committee of the Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis, TANF advisory committee of the State of Illinois Department of Human Services for over twenty years, State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Legislative Advisory Committee of the Catholic Conference of Illinois, Mayor Washington’s committee to End Hunger (Chicago) and the Board of Trustees of DePaul University.
Corliss Cox of Saint Louis, Missouri, is being honored as a Pillar of Dominican Spirituality. She illumines the Gospel as the coordinator of Youth Ministry at the Saint Charles Lwanga Center. This award recognizes that a person exemplifies what it means to love God and neighbor. She has demonstrated her commitment in the planning and implementation of the KUJENGA Leadership Conference, the facilitation of 7 Habits for Effective Pre-Teens and the Fallible Human Beings Teen group for the enhancement of spirituality. As part of her continuing education in her vocation as youth minister, she has attended numerous workshops relating to pastoral care issues of special importance to teens, She has attended the Cycles of Scripture Study and in recent years has devoted a great part of her life to the formation program for profession as an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet. She also dedicates herself to her Parish, serving as a liturgical minister.
Kathleen Davis of Saint Louis, Missouri, will be honored as a Pillar of Dominican Spirituality. Kathleen is the leader of youth ministry and RCIA at Mary Queen of Peace, in Webster Groves, Missouri. Her interactions and spiritual guidance with teens exemplifies the Pillars of Dominican Spirituality. She was the leader of annual “survivor retreats” that allow teens to “walk with the homeless” enabling them to perform community service while gaining awareness of the struggle to survive that many in our own community face each day. In addition to that retreat, she also leads the annual Luke 18 retreats, preparing more than 150 seventh and eighth graders to help bring the Gospels to life. Kathleen serves the community as a hospital chaplain at Cardinal Glennon Hospital and is the Volunteer coordinator for Covenant House Missouri.
Rosario Gasquet of Saint Louis, Missouri, will be honored as a Pillar of Dominican Spirituality for service to people in her native Peru. Rosario has been responsible for making arrangements for birthmothers to meet adoptive parents, scheduling court proceedings and meetings with social workers, lawyers, doctor visits, living arrangements and social events for adoptive families. She served as an interpreter and managed the entire adoption process for approximately 180 adoptions. As a teacher at Gateway Academy, Rosario established an English as a Second Language program and worked with the school’s Foreign Exchange Students Program. She has also taught at St. Austin School, John Paul II High School and Meramec Community College. She is also the founder and director of EMDAP (Estudiantes Misioneros de Apoyo a Peruanos), a non -profit group that is responsible for more than five three-week-long missionary trips to Chiclayo, Peru. Rosario continues to bring people together, and she is currently working for the Legionnaires of Christ coordinating their foreign exchange student programs in Dallas and Houston.
Sister Carolyn Sur, S.S.N.D., of Saint Louis, Missouri, is honored as a Pillar of Dominican Spirituality. Sister Carolyn served her community as Campus Minister at the St. Louis University School of Law and at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana. In the latter position she preached in an annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Program and participated weekly in an Ecumenical Book Discussion at Indiana State University. Upon receiving her Ph.D. in Historical Theology she taught courses for the Diocese of Shreveport, Louisiana. Sister Carolyn will celebrate fifty years of living in community as a vowed religious in the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She also serves as a member of the Metropolitan Congregations United, which seeks better living conditions for the citizens of Lemay, Missouri.

<description>(St. Louis) Arriving late in the year 1510, Dominicans have been preaching and teaching in America for 500 years. Our legacy is significant as we began our ministry in the New World. The first friars were disturbed and confronted by the treatment of the Indigenous Peoples. They were seriously oppressed and pushed into submission by the Spanish who colonized their land.
The Dominicans, after studying the atrocities, decided to make a public denouncement of the treatment of the Indians through the form of a sermon. Each of the friars signed the document and Fr. Antonio Montesinos was commissioned to preach this sermon during Advent, 1511. The sermon was not preserved, but Bartolome de Las Casas incorporated an extract in his work, History of the Indies.
As members of the Dominican Family in the Americas, we will begin to commemorate this important anniversary through a webcast on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 7:00 pm. The program will focus on the past and present issues challenging the Dominican Family in America. Rumor has it that Fr. Montesinos may make an appearance. This presentation will be available for downloading as well as converted into DVDs.&amp;#160; Presenters will include James Barnett, O.P., Marcelline Koch, O.P., Margaret Mace, O.P., Chuck Dahm, O.P., and Toni Harris, O.P.
The community of Aquinas Institute of Theology will gather to experience this event, beginning with evening prayer at 4:30 pm in the Aquinas chapel, followed by a potluck dinner in Ascension Commons. The webcast program will begin at 7:00 pm in rooms 149/151. If you are interested in joining us, please send e-mail to visit@ai.edu.

<title>Rev. Mr. Dennis Chitwood Honored with Aquinas Institute's 2011 Great Preacher Award</title>

<description>(St. Louis) Aquinas Institute of Theology is pleased to honor Reverend Mr. Dennis Chitwood, M.A.P.S., Deacon of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, as the 2011 recipient of its annual Great Preacher Award. The Great Preacher Award will be presented to Deacon Chitwood on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Rose of the Hill, 2300 Edwards, in St. Louis.
Aquinas Institute, run by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), instituted the Great Preacher Award in 1995 to recognize those who by their words and actions have contributed in an outstanding way to the building up of the Catholic community. Aquinas Institute considers the Great Preacher Award a powerful means of renewing the Church and promoting good preaching while sharing its Dominican charism. The award is intended not only to sustain preachers of the Word but also to help Catholics become more attuned to hearing the Word.
Born in St. Louis, Mr. Chitwood attended St. Bernadette Grade School in Lemay and Bishop DuBourg High School in South St. Louis. He attended Harris Teacher College, Washington University, and Pope Paul VI Institute of Catechetical and Pastoral Studies. In 1994, he earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (M.A.P.S.) from Aquinas Institute of Theology.
Deacon Dennis Chitwood was ordained in the Archdiocese of St. Louis on January 28, 1984. His first assignment after ordination was at St. Mary Magdalen parish in South St. Louis, where he served as a pastoral associate and oversaw teen and adult formation efforts. In 1989, he began serving as a pastoral associate at Sts. Peter and Paul parish in the Soulard area. In 1994, Deacon Chitwood became director of the Catholic Newman Center and campus ministry for the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and in that leadership role he helped implement programs such as the Spring Break Alternative, Taize prayer, Hunger Awareness Week, and the Awakening Retreat. During that time, he also was director/liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Center (now Catholic Renewal Center). In 2000, Deacon Chitwood went to Cur&#233; of Ars parish in Shrewsbury, leading the young adult ministry there. In 2002, he was assigned to All Saints parish in University City, where he also worked with young adult ministry. He then took up service with Annunciation parish in Webster Groves in 2005. Currently he is in semi-retirement, serving at the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in Soulard.
In addition to his parish roles, Deacon Chitwood has also offered pastoral service for many young adult ministries, including Teens Encounter Christ, the Silver Trumpets youth ministry, which he helped to found in the 1980s, and the Upper Room young adult ministry. Mr. Chitwood was also a chaplain at St. Louis University and with the Boy Scouts of America. He taught Advanced Homiletics for deacons at Pope Paul VI Institute in St. Louis, and was an instructor of Catholic charismatic spirituality. Along with many other ministries in the St. Louis archdiocese, in 2005 he and his wife Elizabeth co-founded Genesis Ministry, which offers spiritual counseling, teaching, preaching, parish missions, and retreats.
Deacon Chitwood’s service has carried him far outside St. Louis’s boundaries as well. In 1998 Deacon Chitwood joined the mission team with Renewal Ministries of Ann Arbor, Mich. With that group, he made mission trips in Ghana in 1998, Uganda in 1999, and Kenya in 2005. He is currently planning a mission trip to Costa Rica.
Aquinas Institute recognizes Dennis Chitwood’s work and leadership as a preacher in both word and service, and wishes to affirm him in his ministry and hold him up as an exemplar of the power of engaging preaching.

<title>Former Aquinas President is new Prior Provincial for Dominican Central Province</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/dãƒæ’ã†â€™ãƒâ¢ã¢â€šâ¬ã…“/resources/joblistings/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/125/Former-Aquinas-President-is-new-Prior-Provincial-for-Dominican-Central-Province.aspx</link>
<description>(St. Louis) Fr. Charles E. Bouchard, O.P., was elected Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great (Central Province) on 14 June 2011. Twenty-four representatives of the Order of Preachers traveled in June from all over the Midwest United States and from Bolivia to a meeting hosted by St. Vincent Ferrer Priory in River Forest, Illinois, for the 18th Provincial Chapter, where they elected Fr. Bouchard as Provincial, as well as electing other Dominican brothers to fill other leadership positions.
Priorities for the provincial leadership team include strengthening Catholic preaching and finding ways for the order to integrate laypeople into roles of responsibility in Catholic schools, healthcare institutions, and other ministries.
“If Catholic ministries are to flourish, there has to be an added value that is rooted in our heritage and spiritual tradition,” Bouchard said, “and preaching is the lifeblood of the Church. Dominicans can be a catalyst for great preaching throughout the Church. It is fundamental to what we do.”
Guiding his work by these priorities, Bouchard enjoyed considerable success in St. Louis. Aquinas Institute of Theology, which he led from 1989 to 2008, grew from 55 students to more than 300. During his tenure, the school introduced the nation’s only Catholic doctoral program in preaching and the first Master of Arts degree in health care mission, a program to prepare lay leaders in Catholic health care to sustain the ministries in the context of fewer vowed religious women. The school also introduced online theological education for students in regions removed from seminaries and Catholic universities. In 2006, the graduate school moved from space it had occupied at Saint Louis University into a renovated industrial space near the campus.
After leading Aquinas Institute, Bouchard became vice president of theological education for Ascension Health, the largest Catholic health care system in the United States. He worked with boards of directors, senior executives, physicians and hospital managers to form in them a deeper grasp of and commitment to the mission of Catholic health care.
Bouchard joined the Dominican order in 1974 and was ordained in 1979. He earned a doctoral degree in moral theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He has lectured, preached and written on the topics of fundamental ethics, sexual and health care ethics, and morality and public policy.
Fr. Andrew Carl Wisdom, promoter of vocations for the Province, said Bouchard “will bring his abundance of creativity, vision, and energy to his role as Prior Provincial as he has to all his other ministries. His gifts align providentially with the challenges as well as wonderful opportunities awaiting the province.”
