Dominican Mini-Course

“Dogs of the Law? St. Dominic, the Albigensians, and the Inquisition” 9:30 am to 12:00 pm daily

Rev. John Vidmar, O.P., a friar of the Province of St. Joseph (New York, Eastern Province), is an Associate Professor of Theology at Providence College, Providence, RI, the only university sponsored by Dominican friars in the U.S. Educated at the Angelicum University (Pontifical University of St. Thomas) in Rome (S.T.D.) he also holds a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in Ecclesiastical History. His areas of expertise include Monasticism, The Popes, The Inquisition, The Reformation, 19th century Catholicism, and American Dominican History. A previous presentation includes the International Congress of History of the Order of the Preachers in the American Continent, Mexico City, Mexico, "Paper: Early Irish Dominican Missionaries and the Foundation and Growth of the First Dominican Province in the United States". April, 2013. His books include: The English Catholic Historians and the English Reformation 1585-1954 Sussex Academic Press (2005); The Catholic Church Through the Ages, Paulist Press (2005); 101 Questions & Answers on The Da Vinci Code and the Catholic Tradition, Paulist Press (2006) co-authored by Dr. Nancy de Flon, and Praying with the Dominicans: To Praise, to Bless, to Preach, Paulist Press( 2008). He has also served as the Provincial Archivist.

Fr. Vidmar, O.P. will offer a Dominican Mini-Course at Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, MO, entitled, “Dogs of the Law? St. Dominic, the Albigensians, and the Inquisition”. Dominican Studies Intensive Mini-Courses were recently cooperatively established by the Provinces of the Order of Preachers of the USA & Canada. The lectures take place Monday through Friday, August 21st through August 25th, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 12:00 p.m. (Noon). The course is intended for Dominican student brothers of the Southern and Central Provinces, and it will be live streamed so that other friars of both provinces and interested parties including Alumni/Alumnae of Aquinas Institute of Theology, and others living at a distance will be able to listen to these engaging lectures.

As part of the weeklong program, Fr. Vidmar will offer a free public lecture on the Inquisition on Tuesday, August 22, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at the Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, MO. The public is cordially invited and welcome to attend..
