Where do I complete the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd formation coursework?

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd formation courses are offered internationally in a variety of formats in a diversity of settings. A full list of current course listings is available at the National Association website n order to receive graduate credit for a formation course, the following requirements must be met:

Would the formation courses that I've already taken count?

Yes, in most cases they could, provided that the courses met for the 90-100 hours that are expected by the National Association. In these cases, the student would need to meet with the MAPS-CGS program director at Aquinas Institute and arrange to have her/his personal albums read and evaluated by a currently recognized formation leader who holds a masters degree in theology or ministry. Aquinas Institute has a list of potential readers that will be made available to students who have completed previous CGS formation work. Students will be asked to pay a standard fee to Aquinas Institute in these situations to help cover a stipend to the reader and administrative costs.

Once the student matriculates in the Aquinas program all formation courses that the student takes from that point on need to meet the graduate standards described above.

How many hours per week should I allot for study?

Cohort students should expect to dedicate one day (or about eight hours) per week to coursework while classes are in session.

What kind of technology is needed to complete this internet-enhanced program?

Regular access to a high-end multimedia computer and internet access through a dedicated phone line or other high-speed connection is necessary, because pre- and post-study course portions are provided via Blackboard's CourseInfo software. All students must attain adequate computer proficiency to participate fully in the online portion of each class. Aquinas Institute automatically enrolls each student in FishersNet, an online learning community for theology and ministry students.

How much does it cost to complete the MAPS-CGS degree as a cohort member?

The following estimates for the MAPS-CGS Cohort 2008 are based on a forty-eight credit program, thirty of which are taken in coursework at Aquinas Institute and eighteen of which are taken in formation courses sponsored by the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The annual fees cover use of facilities at Saint Louis University and Aquinas Institute technology fees. Annual tuition increases are linked to the inflation rate. This estimated tuition schedule is based on the 2007-2008 rate of $592/credit hour and assumes a 3 percent annual increase. Travel, room and board, and textbook figures all are listed only as tentative estimates. Fees for the transfer of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd formation courses are included, but not the tuition of the formation courses themselves.

Financial aid is available to MAPS-CGS participants. Applicants interested in applying for aid are invited to contact the Office of Admissions at 314.256.8806 or admissions@ai.edu. Some students are also able to share costs or seek reimbursement for tuition from congregations or other church bodies. While recommended, it is not required that students utilize the room & board offered the cohort. If a student has local housing and transportation available through extended family and friends, this also can help to reduce cost of participation.
